I. what is meditation?

Meditation is a method for acquainting our mind with virtue .The more we are familiar with our virtue, the mind becomes more calmer and peaceful. When the mind is calm and peaceful we experience true happiness . Meditation   helps to train our  mind  to  experience  this  even   when  there are  adverse  external conditions.

Types of meditation..

Analytical meditation   When we intend the meaning of a Dharma instruction, which we have heard or read then we do analytical meditation.
Placement meditation    Single pointed concentration is placement meditation. We have a guideline or an object on which we have to concentrate. back

II.Objectives of meditation

There are three basic objectives...
* To protect self from the danger of taking lower rebirth  so that in future lives one can get human rebirth and is able to practise Dharma.
* To protect from uncontrolled rebirth by attaining liberation from samsara.
* The main and the last objective is to attain full enlightenment or buddhahood so that we can benifit all living beings.

III.Preparation for meditation

To practise and get the full purpose of meditation is like cultivating crops. Some preparation is required to remove the obstructions that might slow the growth. First, we must purify our mind to eliminate the negative karma we have gathered in the past. Second , we need to give our mind the strenght to support the growth of Dharma realization by seeing the merits. Third, by asking for the blessings of the holy beings . Without their help and support it is very difficult to achieve the GOAL.

IV.Prayer before meditation

With my body, speech and mind, humbly I prostrate,
and make offerings both set out and imagined.
I confess my wrong deeds from all time,
And in the virtues of all,
Please stay until Samsara ceases,
And turn the wheel of Dharma for us.
I dedicate all virtues to great enlightenment.

V.Simple breathing meditation

1.     Breathing helps us to calm our mind . As we breathe out we should imagine that we exale all our negative , obstacles and distracting thoughts in the form of black smoke. As we breathe in imagine that we inhale the blessings of all the holy beings in the form of pure, white light. Continue for few minutes untill the mind is calm and peaceful.
2. Combine the breathing with the recitation of the mantra , OM  AH  HUM (mentally). With the faith we receive the blessings of the mind, body and speech of all enlightened beings.
3. To do this , we breathe gently through both the nostrils. As we inhale ,we mentally recite OM. WE than hold the breathe at our heart and mentally recite AH.Then as we gentally exale, we mentally recite HUM.
To begin with we do it for 5-6 cycle and increase it to as many as we are able to do without discomfort.
